How To Remove Clutch Basket Nut

  • #i

I'm nigh to supplant the bendix gear and bound due to grinding racket.

I don't have a special tool (or erstwhile welded plates) to hold the clutch basket when unmounting the cente nut.

To hold the handbasket nevertheless, is it maybe enough to just footstep on the rear brake with a gear engaged? Or volition I withal need to use a special tool?

You lot can make a tool by drilling a couple of holes in one of your clutch plates and bolting a sturdy "Fifty" subclass to the plate. Chamfer the holes to eliminate any burrs and reinstall the plate when you are finished.

Put a couple of nuts in between the plate and the bracket to allow the plate to be positioned below the edge of the basket.

A special tool to do this job is a waste of time and money.

Unless you're cursed with a bike with spokes, that is.

With mags, simply lay a broom handle across the swing arm to block the rear wheel from turning. Clutch nut off and back on like shooting fish in a barrel as pie.

Jayel,

Rest should non be a trouble, but you can ever drill two more holes opposite the starting time two.

I used a bunch of zip ties, a rag, impact wrench, and another set of hands to accept it off. I used even more zip ties and withal had a heck of a fourth dimension actually torquing that matter dorsum downwardly. really wish i had a spare clutch plate when i was fixing my kickstarter.

Personally I cant await to take my clutch apart once again so I can supervene upon that needle bearing and some stronger springs.

Zombis,

Yous don't need a spare clutch plate with the bolt on bracket method. Just reinstall the plate when you lot are finished.

My clutch works fine, just thing it's a chip hard sometimes to change into neutral when hot and standing still, even though I have adapted information technology all possible ways, both cold and warm.

That's just the way the XS650 is....:shrug:

My clutch works fine, just matter it's a chip hard sometimes to change into neutral when hot and standing still, fifty-fifty though I have adapted information technology all possible ways, both common cold and warm.

Would a new needle bearing amend my clutch regarding this matter? In what other way will it ameliorate the clutch?

No, a new needle bearing in the clutch volition not improve the "finding neutral" thing.

Here's a few things I've washed:
one) I put a small piece of metal under the spring in the neutral detent. This applies more than pressure so that the detent is more likely to stay in neutral and not go past it.

ii) I drilled a second pigsty in the clutch worm gear operating arm. My stock arm had its normal pigsty i.781 " from the centre of the worm gear. My new hole is 1.438" from the centre. The stock plate separation (pushrod move) was about 0.079". The new method gives about 0.097", which makes for about 0.018" more plate separation.

3) I re-adjust the clutch lever costless-play once the engine has heated up.

I can observe neutral very easily. Really, there's almost no demand to find neutral with the engine running. Go out the bike in gear,shut off the engine and then select neutral.

marp68;

You should read this before ordering parts;

IMHO, an oil mist lubricated needle roller bearing is not likely to wear out. When I had my clutch autonomously, I inspected the bearing and could encounter no indication of wear, so I re-installed it. You tin use a micrometer to mensurate its thickness.................mine was 0.079". Too, don't forget that the OEM begetting was made in Japan and is of much higher quality than what is sold in afterwards marketplace now. Inspect it under a magnifying glass, measure the thickness, and if it appears OK then re-utilise it.

marp68,

You lot should develop the technique of shifting into neutral as you come to a finish while the bike is still moving.
